Situated
in the idyllic Exe Valley, eight miles north of Exeter and thought to
be one of the oldest villages in the county with its constantly flowing
leat, picturesque cottages, cob walls and thatched roofs. This Devon village
is midway between two National Parks, Exmoor an hour to the North and
likewise westerly to Dartmoor.
The
Wesley Connection
Tarmac
replaces the old cobble stone turnpike road in Silverton, along which
John Wesley himself rode in November 1730 to visit his bereaved sister-in-law
at Blundell's in Tiverton. What fame! Come and walk the hallowed tarmac
outside the present building, erected 1914 and now forming part of the
Exeter Circuit within the Plymouth & Exeter Methodist District. |
Methodism
in Silverton
Early
records are sketchy but in 1834 John Norman, a basket maker, obtained
a licence to preach in his house in Parsonage Lane (demolished 1964).

with Bath stone dressing and leaded glass windows. Sunday Services of
Worship are currently 10:30 am and 6:30 pm with regular innovations in
alternative worship and evening fellowships. Young People meet alternate
Fridays for a lively programme of activity – Christian teaching,
music, craft, drama. A mid week a monthly House
Group meets for Bible study and discussion and also you will find the church open each Saturday morning for prayerful reflection and quiet contemplation. The Minister is in attendance in the Church most Friday mornings. For worship there is a Loop
